Changing Matter

Changes in matter ] Importance of chemical reactions ] Chemical Reactions ] On-line practice ]

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this chapter, students should be able to :

  1. classify and differentiate between physical change and chemical change
  2. explain that changes in matter which undergo chemical reactions are due to rearrangements of atoms and molecules
  3. observe the changes that matter undergoes through mixing, heating, exposure to light and passing of an electric current through it
  4. state the effect of heat on matter
  5. identify a chemical reaction as a process leading to the formation of new products
  6. use word equations to represent chemical reactions
  7. describe everyday chemical changes such as burning, cooking, rusting, decay and respiration
  8. explain that energy transfers accompany chemical reactions
  9. state that materials from a variety of sources can be converted into a new and useful products by chemical reactions
  10. describe how to control and make use of chemical reactions
  11. discuss the possible effects of burning fuels on the environment
  12. differentiate between exothermic and endothermic reaction
  13. describe the effect of concentration, pressure, size of particle, temperature and catalysts on speeds of reactions
